Every Child Deserves to Learn What They Love
For many children and young people, the world isn't a place of play - it's difficult.
They're navigating the quiet, grinding strain of family financial worries, the paralysing anxiety that makes the school gates feel like a wall, and the shadows left by childhood trauma. For those finding their way through mental health journeys or the unique paths of special educational needs, we also know that life can sometimes feel like a series of closed doors.
At Thriving Through Recreation, we refuse to let a child or young person’s struggle define the boundaries of their childhood or their potential. We see the spark, even when it's hidden behind a cloud.
Families tell us what helps, so if a child is hurting or struggling, that is the only reason we need to step in.
We are here to light a way through the healing power of community connection and the thrill of learning what they love.
About Us
Thriving Through Recreation bridges the gap between families & their support networks, and the simple, restorative power of learning through recreation. By connecting children and young people across Cambridgeshire and Gloucestershire with the weekly activities that they love, we provide a vital lifeline away from their daily challenges - whether that's through the rhythm of a drum kit, the focus of a gymnastics beam, or the freedom of an art canvas. If there is learning in their local community that will help them sparkle, then we will make it happen.
We're here to dismantle some of the barriers holding children and young people back, offering a helping hand rather than dictating a path.
Finding Interests.
Facilitating Growth.
Funding Belonging.
Our 12-month Activities Support Programme is a catalyst for lifelong learning, designed to give struggling children and young people the freedom to explore their potential and the steady ground to grow.
We don’t just bridge the gap—we build the path. By identifying local passions and expertise, mentoring them on their journey, and removing every financial barrier, we help children and young people ignite their sparkle.

We don't choose the learning.
The child does.
For many children, life is often a series of visits & assessments, long waits for support, and "interventions"; they're told where to go and what to do by adults and services.
We want to change that feeling of powerlessness.

When a young person has the autonomy to choose their own recreational learning, they aren't just trying a hobby - they are taking ownership of their own growth, discovering their identity, and building genuine self-esteem.
We're in it for the long haul.
Learning doesn't stop after a single lesson.
Many support services for children and young people are stretched, and help can feel short-lived, sporadic and disjointed.
That's why we commit to the long haul.
We walk alongside our children and families through a sustained journey, providing consistent weekly funding, regular check-ins, and ongoing advocacy. This deeper relationship creates a vital sense of stability when the rest of their world can feel turbulent.
We're matchmakers.
Making connections where it matters.
Children and young people can often feel disconnected from their own neighbourhoods and unable to find the communities that will help them feel like themselves.
We turn a sometimes fragmented landscape of local activity providers into a cohesive system of opportunity and expertise for families and their support services to tap into. We connect children directly to the local communities that will matter to them. They aren't just participating; they're learning to belong.
We're driven by learning, not by labels.
While the desire to explore is universal, far too many children and young people find themselves sidelined from the activities they love due to circumstances beyond their control.

But every child deserves a break from their burdens.
Weekly recreational activities offer a safe, joyful escape - a dedicated pocket of time where they can leave their difficulties at the door and just focus on playing & learning, creating & exploring, and becoming who they want to become.
Our Vision and Values

Recreation Matters
We believe that recreational learning should be part of every child's education.
Education provides every child with the tools they need to thrive now, and in the future, and they won't just learn them in a school classroom.
Equity is Essential
We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to thrive.
Every child is unique so supporting them to thrive must take a flexible and fair approach, and, of course, everyone is more likely to thrive if those around them are too.
Values Guide Us
We believe empathy and humility are vital to achieving our mission.
Facilitating life-changing recreational learning for those who need it most requires a constant willingness to listen and understand one another.
